Derby County’s Cyrus Christie picked up his tenth international cap for the Republic of Ireland on Sunday evening – and he marked the occasion with a goal.

The right-back was named in the starting line-up as Martin O’Neill’s side took on Uruguay in a friendly match at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, with Ireland running out 3-1 winners.

Stoke City’s Jonathan Walters put the hosts ahead in the first half, only for Atlético Madrid’s José Giménez to head home an equaliser soon afterwards.

Christie then put Ireland back in front moments into the second half after his low cross from the edge of the box found its way into the far corner, to register his second international goal.

The scoring was then rounded off by West Bromwich Albion’s James McClean with 13 minutes remaining.

Fellow Derby defenders Richard Keogh and Alex Pearce were on the bench, with Keogh unused and Pearce being introduced into the action just after the hour mark.

Ireland’s full focus, for the next seven days, will be their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier at home to Austria next Sunday.

O’Neill’s men are handily placed to reach next summer’s finals in Russia and are currently joint top of Group D alongside Serbia after five matches
