Derby County striker Chris Martin came off the bench as Scotland maintained their hopes of reaching the 2018 FIFA World Cup with a crucial victory over Malta on Monday evening.

Martin, 28, replaced Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths up front for the final 20 minutes of their 2-0 win at Hampden Park.

Christophe Berra got the ball rolling for Scotland early on before Griffiths got their second after half-time.

Derby’s Ikechi Anya was also an unused substitute in the game for the hosts.

After a 3-0 success in Lithuania at the end of last week, it has been an impressive few days for the Tartan Army as they look to reach a major tournament for the first time since 1998.

Gordon Strachan’s side are joint-third in Group F, alongside Slovenia, but, as a result of group leaders England defeating second placed Slovakia at Wembley Stadium, they are now just one point off of a play-off spot with two games to play.

Scotland have the chance to go above Slovakia when they meet at Hampden Park next month before rounding off their group campaign away to Slovenia.
