Derby County Community Trust and African Adventures are looking for volunteers to join the ever-growing annual Rams in Kenya trip.

Since 2012, Rams fans and other local volunteers have been making the trip to the Nakuru slum areas of Kenya - and 2018 will be no different.

To date, 223 volunteers have made the journey over six years, working with hundreds of children in deprived areas and completing essential building, refurbishment and teaching work in local schools.

The Rams in Kenya trip now has ten Derby and Derbyshire schools supporting the trip via fundraising activities, pen-pal projects and most valuably by sending teachers on the trip to support and develop the quality of teaching and education across schools.

Numerous local businesses support the trip by helping volunteers reach their fundraising target by ‘sponsoring’ their t-shirt and donating items of use.

Sarah Rawson, who was one of the 59 strong Rams in Kenya team in 2017, said: “When I signed up to go out to Kenya I knew I'd have an amazing trip but I didn’t quite realise how much of an impact spending two weeks in Africa could have on both my life and of those that we spent our days with.

“It was such an incredible two weeks with some awe-inspiring people. The volunteers on the trip had something special to bring to the group and seeing such an eclectic mix of people working together to achieve a common goal is something to behold. I love what this trip does for people and although I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again – it really has changed my life.”

Along with the volunteering, the trip includes a Rift Valley Adventure Day which is a visit to the Nakuru National Safari, Thompson falls and the equator.

The trip also provides the opportunity to visit the Menengai Crater as well as an elephant orphanage and the giraffe manor in Nairobi.

The trip, which is facilitated by African Adventures, benefits both the Derby County Community Trust and the impoverished areas around Nakuru in Kenya.

Every volunteer is tasked with raising money of which a percentage goes towards the Derby County Community Trust’s disability programme as well as the Kenyan school projects.

Two week option - £2,530 per person (Saturday 19th May to Sunday 3rd June 2018)

One week option - £1,830 per person (Saturday 26th May – Sunday 3rd June 2018)

Both options include flights, transfers, accommodation and three meals per day. No formal skills or experience is necessary to join the trip, just enthusiasm, commitment and a will to help.

The Derby County Community Trust will be hosting a no-obligation information evening on Thursday 21st September, from 7pm-8:30pm in Igor’s at Pride Park Stadium.
