Whilst circumstances currently mean there’s no live football to enjoy, dcfc.co.uk is delving into the archives to feature a photograph from Derby County’s illustrious history.

Derby County 4-2 Nottingham Forest (20th March 2004)

Paul Peschisoldio is pictured here celebrating one of the most unique goals in Derby County’s history. The former Canada international striker, who joined Derby in early March 2004, made 103 appearances for the Rams and scored 24 times.

His third goal in a Derby shirt, however, came in a 4-2 home win over local rivals Forest on this day 16 years ago in bizarre circumstances.

A clearance from Forest goalkeeper Barry Roche went horribly wrong as the ball took an awkward bounce just as he went to clear his lines. The bounce itself came from the ball hitting a stray Coffee Cup, which had been blown onto the pitch on a blustery Derbyshire afternoon. The ball scooped up in the air and fell perfectly to Peschisolido, who had the simple task of tapping the ball into the unguarded net.

Peschisolido’s name is etched into Derby County folklore as a result and his two-goal haul in that game, as well as assisting the goals for Ian Taylor and Marcus Tudgay, saw him produced arguably his best performance in a Rams shirt.
