Nigel Clough Takes Over As Derby County’s Manager
Pictured here is Nigel Clough posing for the cameras after being named as Derby County’s new manager in January 2009.
Clough was appointed on the same evening that Derby defeated Manchester United 1-0 at Pride Park Stadium in the Semi-Final First Leg of the 2008/09 Carling Cup, although they did lose the Second Leg 4-2 at Old Trafford to miss out on a place in the Final.
The new Derby boss watched on from the stands as Kris Commons scored the only goal of the game on a memorable evening.
Clough left Burton Albion to take over the Rams and replace Paul Jewell after a successful and lengthy period in charge of the Brewers.
He went on to manage 233 Rams matches following his appointment in all competitions, with his departure confirmed in September 2013 after four and a half years at the helm.
Clough was following in his father’s footsteps when taking over at Derby after his late father Brian steered the Rams to the First Division title in 1971/72.
Brian, who died in 2004, took the club from the old Second Division to become champions of England and European Cup semi-finalists during his spell in charge between 1967 and 1973.
