Derby Take On Barcelona At Pride Park Stadium A Year After Its Opening

Pictured here is former Derby County defender Stefan Schnoor in action during Derby County’s pre-season friendly against Barcelona at Pride Park Stadium in the summer of 1998.

A year after taking on Italian side Sampdoria in a pre-season friendly at the newly-opened Pride Park Stadium in 1997, the Rams welcomed not only one of Spain’s, but the world’s, biggest sides as European giants Barcelona came to town.

Managed by Louis Van Gaal, captained by Portuguese legend Luis Figo and with five stars from the 1998 World Cup on the substitutes’ bench, the Catalan side established a two-goal lead through Luis Enrique and Oscar Garcia.

Paulo Wanchope halved the deficit in a pulsating contest, before Brazilian striker Anderson restored the two-goal advantage for the visitors as they ran out 3-1 winners.

Interestingly, current Derby boss Phillip Cocu was amongst the substitutes for Barcelona on the night.

Derby finished 8th in the Premiership during the 1998/99 campaign were crowned as La Liga champions, with Cocu playing 36 times in the league and scoring 12 goals in his first season with the Spanish giants.
