Wayne Rooney is content with Derby County’s start to the 2021/22 Sky Bet Championship season.

Derby went into the first international break of the season with six points from their opening five league games.

Rooney’s side registered one win and three draws, as well as a single defeat, from their first batch of matches.

As well as making a steady start to the season in terms of their points return, the Rams’ boss has seen his side produce some encouraging displays.

Derby’s displays have, arguably, in the opening weeks of the season have warranted a greater return of points.

The two-week international break means there’s time to assess the side’s start to the campaign and reflect on the positive signs, as well as the areas that require improvement.

“Our start has been okay,” Rooney said when speaking to RamsTV. “It’s not great, but not disastrous. It’s a decent start but that’s where we’re at.

“I think the lads have been brilliant from the work and energy that they’re putting in every day from the start of pre-season to now.

“The group have been great so they will have a well-earned break over the next few days in the international break.

“They will have time off with their families and friends and they will come back in and get ready for the next set of games.”

He added: “We’ve got some time now to reflect and look at what we’ve done well and also those areas that we need to improve.

“We’ve gone ahead in a number of games and not managed to get the win, so that’s something we need to improve on.”

Derby return to action in the Sky Bet Championship on Friday 10th September at Birmingham City (8pm kick-off).
