Club History

Founded in 1887, Blackpool played their home games at Raikes Hall and the Athletic Grounds before moving to where they remain to this day, Bloomfield Road.

It wasn’t until 1923 when the team switched to their well known ‘Tangerine’ colour after trialling a number of different strips in the years prior.

They were the first team to be promoted through all divisions of the Football League via the play-off system and to this day still boasts the most play-off trophies with six.

In 2010 they reached the Premier League but spent just one season there under manager Ian Holloway.

Since their stint in the Premier League they have dropped all the way down to League Two, rose back up to the Championship and now, after relegation last season, find themselve backs in League One.

Played For Both

Shaun Barker

Popular personality Shaun Barker, who remains very close to the Rams owing to his co-commentary duties on RamsTV, played a key role at Blackpool before his move to the Rams.

Barker made more appearances for the Tangerines than any other club in his career, racking up 149 between 2006-2009.

He was made club captain at Blackpool in 2008 but then made the move to the Rams the following year.

The defender went on to make 105 appearances for Derby and scored six goals in that time before suffering a serious knee injury in 2012 that sidelined him for around three years. After leaving the Rams in 2015 he made his comeback under former Derby boss Nigel Clough at Burton Albion.

Paul Simpson

A name linked to both clubs is one that will return to Pride Park Stadium next season as manager of Carlisle United.

Simpson, who was a winger in his playing days, had an extremely successful period with the Rams which included helping the side win promotion to the Premier League in the 1995/96 season under Jim Smith.

He spent five years in Derbyshire before moving on to Wolves and then Blackpool.

Like his time with the Rams, he was part of a promotion squad with the Tangerines too, helping them achieve promotion to the third tier in 2001 via the play-offs.

Simpson later returned to Derby County as assistant to Steve McClaren in 2013.

Tom Ince

Another player who was popular with both Derby and Blackpool fans was winger Tom Ince.

The son of former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Ince began his career at Liverpool but, after failing to break into the first-team picture, he made his name with Blackpool in impressive fashion between 2011-2014.

He rattled in 33 goals in 113 appearances for the Tangerines before stepping up to the Premier League with Crystal Palace and later Hull City.

An impressive loan spell with Derby in the second half of the 2014/15 season, scoring 11 goals in 18 games, saw him earn a permanent switch to Pride Park Stadium in the summer of 2015.

Ince netted a further 27 goals in 96 appearances in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons, taking his total to 38 in 114 for Derby, before moving back to the Premier League with Huddersfield Town in the summer of 2017.

Spells at Stoke City and Luton Town, the latter during a brief loan spell, followed before he sealed a move to Reading in the summer of 2022 after a loan stint in the second half of the 2021/22 season.

2022/23 Season

Last season was far from ideal for the Seasiders, who found themselves relegated to League One after just two campaigns back in the second tier.

Manager Neil Critchley resigned just prior to the season getting underway, taking up a coaching staff position at Premier League side Aston Villa, and was replaced by Michael Appleton.

After a disappointing first half to the campaign Appleton was replaced by the experienced Mick McCarthy in a bid to keep the Tangerines up, but McCarthy himself didn’t last for the entire second half of the season and was replaced by former striker Stephen Dobbie, who took the role on an Interim basis over the Easter period.

Blackpool were relegated to Sky Bet League One after a 3-2 defeat to Millwall at the end of April and went on to re-appoint Critchley as their new boss earlier this summer as they prepare for life back in League One.

Record Against The Rams

Derby have had the better of these two sides historically and in recent years.

The Rams have won the last six games in a row against the Tangerines and nine of the last 10. The only loss in that time came in a 2-1 defeat at Bloomfield Road in April 2013.

The last meeting between the sides came towards the end of the 2021/22 season with Malcolm Ebiowei and Eiran Cashin scoring their first-ever career goals in a 2-0 victory.

The first ever meeting between the teams was back in 1907 with the Rams again coming out on top in a 2-1 victory in League Division Two.

Over the course of history, Derby have 33 wins to Blackpool’s 23 with 18 draws. The two have however only drawn one game in all competitions since 1977.
