Here, dcfc.co.uk will take a look at each one in focus ahead of the new campaign getting underway at the start of August.

In this instalment, we assess one of last season’s beaten play-off sides in Peterborough United.

2022/23 finish: 6th (Sky Bet League One)

Club History

Established in 1934, Peterborough United were elected to the English Football League in 1960.

Their nickname, ‘The Posh’ reportedly comes from Pat Tirrell, manager of Fletton United who was reported to say he was 'looking for posh players for a posh new team'.

They achieved their highest ever finish in the 1992/93 season when they came 10th in Division One.

Former Rams goalkeeper Eric Steele holds the most consecutive appearances for the side with 148 between 1973 and 1977.

In 2013/14, they landed their first ever English Football League Trophy, beating Chesterfield 3-1 in the Final at Wembley Stadium.

Played For Both

Joe Ward

One of Paul Warne’s summer signings of the 2023 summer transfer window, right-sider Joe Ward was a regular with the Posh before his move to the Rams.

He made 233 appearances for Peterborough between 2018 and this summer before he took up the option to join Derby on a three-year deal last month.

Jack Marriott

Current Fleetwood Town striker Jack Marriott had two spells with Peterborougj either side of three-year spell with the Rams between 2018 and 2021.

After an incredible campaign with the Posh in 2017/18 which saw him land a hatful of awards including a place in the PFA Team Of The Year, the Rams secured his signature for the following season.

He spent three years with Derby before returning to the Posh once again in 2021 for a second permanent spell.

2022/23 Season

Whilst the regular season ended up being a memorable one for the Posh, the play-off proved to be one to forget.

Darren Ferguson’s side cemented a place in the Sky Bet League One play-offs on the final day of the campaign at the expense of the Rams with a 2-0 win at Barnsley.

That set them up with a tie against third placed Sheffield Wednesday. The Posh took an incredible 4-0 lead in the First Leg but a 5-1 victory for Wednesday after extra-time in the Second Leg at Hillsborough saw the game go to penalties.

It was Wednesday that landed the lottery of the shoot-out to end Peterborough’s season in heartbreaking fashion.

Record Against The Rams

It was all-square in terms of victories last season between the Posh and the Rams.

Derby claimed a 2-1 victory at Pride Park Stadium back in August with Jason Knight and David McGoldrick scoring late goals before Peterborough got their own back on home turf in March with a 2-0 win.

Historically, the two have only faced off 16 times over the years with Derby winning eight of those to Peterborough’s six and two draws.
