Club History

Founded in 1932, Wigan Athletic became a Football League club for the first time in 1978.

They have played their home games at the DW Stadium since 1999, before which they played at Springfield Park.

Wigan were promoted to the Premier League for the first time in 2004/05 and their first year in the top-flight saw them reach the EFL Cup Final where they lost out to Manchester United.

The Tics had to wait less than a decade after that defeat to land their first major trophy in English football. A last-minute 1-0 winner against Manchester City saw them secure a historic first FA Cup win for the club in 2013.

In recent years the club have struggled with off the field financial issues which have seen them yo-yo between the second and third tier and they will start the 2023/24 season with minus eight points.

2022/23Season

Last season was a tough one for Wigan both on and off the field.

Three managers were at the helm between the start and the end of the campaign with Leam Richardson, Kolo Toure and Shaun Maloney all having stints in the dugout.

They suffered points deductions as off the field drama rumbled on throughout the year and were eventually relegated on 29th April.

Played For Both

Conor Sammon

Striker Sammon joined the Rams from Wigan Athletic in 2012 after just one season at the DW Stadium.

The former Republic of Ireland international stayed with Derby until 2016 when he moved north of the border to join SPL side Hearts.

Sammon made more appearances for the Rams than anywhere else in his career with 90.

Scott Carson

The ever-popular goalkeeper that is Carson joined Derby in 2015 after two seasons with Wigan.

He joined the Rams following The Tics’ relegation to Sky Bet League One and went on to spend six years in Derbyshire before getting moving to Manchester City to act as their third choice goalkeeper.

Like Sammon, Carson has made more appearances, 171, for the Rams than any other club in his career.

Graeme Shinnie

Fans' favourite midfielder Shinnie joined the Rams from Aberdeen in 2019.

He remained with Derby until January 2022 when he went on to join Wigan whilst the club was in Administration.

Shinnie spent just one season with the Tics before returning north of the border to Aberdeen on loan in January 2023 - making that move permanent this summer to return 'home'.

Record Against The Rams

Despite both teams spending a lot of their history in the top two tiers of English football, the two have only faced off 21 times.

The first meeting came back in 1984 with the most recent being a 1-1 draw on Boxing Day in 2019.

Derby have a slightly better record than The Tics having won nine times to their seven whilst the other five meetings have ended in draws.

The Rams are unbeaten in the last seven meetings between the two sides with Wigan’s last victory coming in the Championship in October 2014.
