Derby County’s Tom Lawrence admitted it was a dream come true to score his first-ever international goal for Wales on Friday evening.

The forward lashed home a superb effort from the edge of the area to earn Chris Coleman’s men a 1-0 win in Georgia to keep their 2018 FIFA World Cup hopes alive.

Wales know that a victory over the Republic of Ireland in Cardiff on Monday evening will secure second spot in Group D and set up a play-off campaign.

Without the services of the injured Gareth Bale, Lawrence stepped up to the plate and produced a moment of real quality to win the game.

Lawrence, who joined Derby from Premier League Leicester City in August, was happy to come up with the goods at a key moment.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Lawrence said: “It was a massive goal and one that we needed in the end; I was just happy to get it.

“It was a great feeling to score and one you can’t really describe.

“It’s something you dream of and it is a dream come true.”

Reviewing the game, Lawrence felt Wales produced a performance that deserved all three points.

Georgia had their moments on the night, but the Welsh backline stood firm.

Lawrence said: “I thought we did well.

“They were always going to be a tough team to beat but performed well and managed to get the win.”
