Whilst circumstances currently mean there’s no live football to enjoy, dcfc.co.uk is delving into the archives to feature a photograph from Derby County’s illustrious history.

For the foreseeable future, we’ll provide you an image each day for supporters to enjoy and reminisce.

Wright Holds Up Rush Whilst With The Rams

Former Derby County defender Mark Wright is pictured here in action against Liverpool’s Ian Rush during the 1990/91 season.

Wright joined Derby from Southampton in August 1987 for a then club-record fee of £760,000 following the Rams’ return to the top-flight under Arthur Cox.

The centre-back was already an England international by the time he linked up with Derby and was a major signing. He was the second member of the England squad to join from Southampton at the time, as Peter Shilton had also been snapped up ahead of the 1987/88 campaign.

Wright was a key player during his four years with Derby and claimed the Rams’ Player of the Season accolade for the 1988/89 and 1989/90 campaigns.

Interest in Wright was high following an impressive showing at the 1990 World Cup in Italy and he went on to join Liverpool for a fee of £2.3 million in the summer of 1991 after Derby had been relegated to the Second Division.

Wright left Derby having made 171 competitive appearances and after he finished his career at Liverpool in 1998 he moved into management at the likes of Southport, Oxford United, Peterborough United and Chester City.
