Club History

Founded in 1887, Wycombe Wanderers didn’t become members of the English Football League until 1993, lifting the Conference title under the management of Martin O’Neill.

Their nickname, The Chairboys, comes from the tradition of chair making in the town of High Wycombe.

Since their promotion to the English Football League, they have never been relegated back out of it, though did survive by the skin of their teeth in 2014, avoiding relegation from Sky Bet League Two only via goal difference.

They have had great success in cup competitions during their time in the league. In 2001, they reached the FA Cup semi-finals as a third-tier side and in 2007 reached the League Cup semi-finals whilst part of the fourth-tier.

In 2020, they reached the Championship for the first time in their history but were relegated back to Sky Bet League One after just one season in the second tier.

2022/23 Season

Last season was the second successive season in Sky Bet League One for the Chairboys following relegation from the Championship in 2020/21.

They started the season under the management of Gareth Ainsworth and were at one point looking well for a play-off spot.

In February 2023, Ainsworth opted to take the job at Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers which somewhat derailed the good form of Wycombe.

Former player Matt Bloomfield took charge and the Chairboys ultimately missed out on the top six though did finish respectively in 9th place.

Played For Both

Nathan Tyson

Former striker Tyson had two spells with the Chairboys with the one the first time around being the most fruitful of his career.

He spent two years in Buckinghamshire between 2004-06 before moving on to Nottingham Forest and later Derby.

Tyson returned to Wycombe in 2017, again spending two seasons with the club. Across his two spells he scored 53 times in 140 appearances.

Richard Keogh

Former Rams captain Keogh joined the Chairboys this summer following the expiration of his contract at Ipswich Town.

The ex-Republic of Ireland international made over 350 appearances for Derby between 2012 and 2019.

Now 36, he embarks on a new challenge with Wycombe in 2023/24.

Rob Lee

Ex-midfielder Lee was with Derby between 2002 and 2003 and Wycombe Wanderers between 2005 and 2006.

After near decade long spells at both Charlton Athletic and Newcastle United respectively, he made the move to Derbyshire before finishing his professional career with the Chairboys.

Record Against The Rams

The Rams have only faced off competitively with the Chairboys four times in history with all four matches coming in the last three years.

The first meeting between the two came in the Championship in the 2020/21 season with a 1-1 draw at Pride Park Stadium being followed up by a 2-1 victory to Derby at Adams Park.

Last season was the first meeting between the two in the third tier of English football and both were able to get one over on the other across the campaign.

The Rams landed a 2-1 victory at Pride Park Stadium in September before Wycombe were able to get their revenge and bring to an end Derby’s long unbeaten run when they landed a 3-2 win at Adams Park in February.
